IGCSE Physics is a rigorous qualification that combines conceptual understanding with mathematical application — from forces and motion to waves, electromagnetism, thermal physics, and nuclear physics. For students at international schools, a strong IGCSE Physics grade is a critical prerequisite for A Level Physics, IB Physics, and university courses in science, engineering, and medicine.

At Nexus Academy, our IGCSE Physics tutors are degree-educated physicists with specialist knowledge of both the Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE Physics specifications. We work with students at all levels — from those aiming to secure a C on the Core paper to those targeting A* on the Extended — building the conceptual clarity and calculation confidence that the top grades require.

The Challenge

What makes IGCSE Physics demanding

IGCSE Physics requires both conceptual understanding and mathematical fluency simultaneously. In a typical examination, a student might need to explain a physical phenomenon in words, draw a diagram illustrating it, and perform a calculation involving it — all within the same question. Students who are strong conceptually but weak mathematically, or vice versa, consistently underperform relative to their actual understanding.

Physics also demands precision in the use of standard form, significant figures, and unit conversions — errors in these lose marks even when the physics is correct. And extended response questions require students to explain processes in clear, sequential steps using precise physical language, which is a skill that requires deliberate practice with mark schemes.

Our Approach

How Nexus IGCSE Physics tutors work

We start by identifying where a student's difficulty lies — is it conceptual understanding, calculation method, diagram technique, or precision of expression? Each requires a different approach, and an effective IGCSE Physics programme addresses all four in proportion to where the student's marks are being lost.

Sessions combine conceptual explanation, worked calculations on the shared whiteboard, diagram practice, and past-paper question work. Students receive written feedback on their extended responses and calculations, with explanations of what the mark scheme required and where their method or expression fell short. Between sessions, students practise specific past-paper questions to build fluency.

International Exam Board Specialists

Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE Physics — specialist coverage of both

Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE have different specifications and mark scheme conventions. Your tutor knows both.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625)

Cambridge IGCSE Physics assesses through written papers and an optional practical paper. The Extended tier includes additional content on more advanced topics and assesses grades A*–E. Our tutors know the Cambridge Physics syllabus in detail — including the specific extended tier content and the command words that distinguish descriptive from analytical answers.

Edexcel International GCSE Physics

Edexcel International GCSE Physics uses a 9–1 grading system and has a specific specification structure and assessment style. Our tutors are familiar with the Edexcel International GCSE Physics specification and its assessment conventions, including the mathematical demands of the higher paper.

Inside a Session

What an IGCSE Physics lesson with Nexus looks like

Sessions are one-to-one and structured around the student's specific syllabus, tier, and current gap profile. A typical lesson focuses on one or two topic areas — reviewing a concept the student finds difficult, working through calculations step by step, and practising a past-paper question with mark scheme feedback.

Calculations are worked through on the shared digital whiteboard so each step is visible and can be corrected in real time. Diagram work — circuit diagrams, ray diagrams, free-body force diagrams — is practised with the same precision expected in examinations. Students receive written feedback on their extended answers throughout the programme.

Physics was the subject holding my daughter back from her preferred sixth form. Nexus gave her clarity on the calculations and she came out with an A in Cambridge IGCSE.
