The Challenge
Why IGCSE Business Studies is harder than it looks
The most common reason students underperform in IGCSE Business Studies is not lack of business knowledge — it is the failure to apply that knowledge to the specific context of the case study. Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE Business examiners explicitly state that generic textbook answers, even when technically correct, score at the lower mark levels. A student who explains the advantages of just-in-time production in general terms will score less than a student who explains how JIT specifically benefits the company in the question, given its size, market, and the constraints described in the source material.
The second challenge is evaluation. Questions worth 8 or more marks require students to consider both sides of an argument, weigh the factors against each other, and reach a supported conclusion. Students who have not been explicitly taught how to structure an evaluative response — argument, counter-argument, judgement with justification — consistently lose the marks at the top of the mark range.
Our Approach
How Nexus IGCSE Business tutors work
Every student begins with a diagnostic that reviews recent marked work, identifies the specific patterns of mark loss, and assesses whether the primary barrier is content knowledge, application technique, or evaluation structure. These three barriers have different solutions — and addressing the wrong one wastes time.
Sessions are structured around the student's exact specification — Cambridge 0450 or Edexcel International GCSE Business. Our tutors use the official mark schemes and examiner reports from both boards as teaching tools. Students learn not just what the answer is, but precisely how the examiner awards marks — and therefore how to write answers that earn them.

International Exam Board Specialists
Cambridge and Edexcel International GCSE — what differs
Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE have different specifications and mark scheme conventions. Your tutor knows both.
Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies (0450 / 0986)
Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies is assessed through two written papers. Paper 1 is a short-answer paper using a case study — students answer compulsory questions requiring knowledge, application, and analysis. Paper 2 is a data response paper with a more extended case study — students answer structured questions including 8 and 12-mark questions requiring analysis and evaluation. The critical feature of both papers is the case study. Answers that refer specifically to the business in the case — using its name, its market, its situation, the data provided — consistently score higher than answers that discuss the topic in general terms. Cambridge examiner reports from 2021–2025 consistently identify failure to apply knowledge to context as the most common source of mark loss on analysis and evaluation questions. Note on future specification: Cambridge is developing a new Business Studies specification (0264 / 0774) for examinations from 2027 onwards. Students sitting exams in 2026 use the current 0450 / 0986 specification. The core content is broadly similar, but students should confirm with their school which specification they are entered for.
Edexcel International GCSE Business (4BS1)
Edexcel International GCSE Business uses a similar case-study structure. Students sit two written papers, each using extended source material. Edexcel's mark schemes reward chains of reasoning — explaining cause, then effect, then the significance of that effect — rather than simply identifying business concepts. Students who state what will happen without explaining the business mechanism behind it consistently score at Level 2 rather than Level 3 or 4. Nexus tutors specifically teach Edexcel's chain-of-reasoning framework for extended response questions.
Inside a Session
What a typical IGCSE Business lesson looks like
IGCSE Business sessions at Nexus are structured around case study practice and mark scheme analysis. A typical session might begin with a case study extract from a past paper, work through several questions together with the tutor demonstrating how to structure each response type, and finish with the student attempting an evaluation question independently while the tutor reviews and gives specific, actionable feedback.
For evaluation questions specifically — the highest-mark questions and the ones most students find hardest — the tutor teaches a consistent structure: present the first argument with evidence from the case, present the counter-argument with evidence, weigh the two against each other in the context of the specific business, and reach a justified conclusion. This framework is practised in every session until it becomes automatic.
“[Student name] was at an international school in Jordan studying Cambridge IGCSE. She knew the business theory well but her Paper 2 answers were always too generic — she described business concepts without linking them back to the case. Her Nexus tutor worked specifically on application technique over six sessions. She went from a predicted C to a final A* in her June exams.”
