Understanding IGCSE

IGCSE versus GCSE — what is the difference?

The IGCSE — International General Certificate of Secondary Education — is the most widely studied international qualification for secondary students aged 14 to 16. Offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education and Pearson Edexcel International, it is studied at British curriculum international schools in more than 140 countries worldwide.

The IGCSE and GCSE cover broadly similar content in most subjects but differ in several important ways. IGCSE is designed for an international audience and is assessed entirely through written examinations — there is no controlled assessment or coursework in most subjects. The Cambridge IGCSE in particular is known for its rigour and is widely respected by universities globally.

Grades are reported differently by exam board. Cambridge IGCSE uses a grade scale of A* to G. Edexcel International GCSE uses a scale of 9 to 1, aligned with the standard GCSE grading used in England.

International Exam Boards

Exam boards we cover

Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE are distinct qualifications with different specifications. Every Nexus IGCSE tutor knows both.

Cambridge IGCSE (CIE)

The world's most widely taken international qualification at secondary level. Our tutors are familiar with Cambridge's assessment objectives, the tiered paper structure (Core and Extended), and the mark scheme conventions Cambridge examiners use.

Edexcel International GCSE (Pearson)

Increasingly popular at British curriculum schools outside the UK. Our tutors know the Edexcel International specifications and their differences from the standard UK GCSE, and prepare students accordingly.

“We are based in Dubai and my daughter's school uses Cambridge IGCSE. Her Maths teacher changed in Year 10 and she fell behind quickly. We found it very hard to find a tutor locally who really knew the Cambridge specification. Her Nexus tutor knew it extremely well — the tiered papers, the exact topic weighting — and within three months she had moved from a C to an A.”

Cambridge IGCSE is offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education and uses a grade scale of A* to G. Nexus Academy prepares students for both Cambridge and Edexcel International GCSE.

Yes. All Nexus Academy IGCSE tutoring takes place online via video call. We work with students across more than 20 countries and accommodate sessions across a wide range of time zones, including early morning and evening UK time to suit students in the Middle East, Asia, and Eastern Europe.

Yes — and this is an important distinction. The Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel International GCSE have specific syllabuses, assessment objectives, and marking conventions that differ from the standard UK GCSE. All Nexus Academy IGCSE tutors are familiar with the specific exam board and specification your child is following.

Earlier is generally better. Students who begin one-to-one tutoring at the start of Year 10 have time to build genuine understanding across the full two-year course. Students who begin in Year 11 can still make significant grade improvements, particularly if sessions are focused on the highest-weighted topics and exam technique. Nexus Academy will advise on the most effective approach based on your child's timeline and starting point.

Nexus Academy offers one-to-one online IGCSE tutoring for home-educated students sitting Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International as private candidates, from £14 per hour. We match the specification the exam centre will enter and start with a free demo lesson. Nexus Academy does not make exam entries. UK home-education families use the same IGCSE tutors as international-school students — see the Home Education tutoring hub for GCSE versus IGCSE and the private-candidate process.
