Why IGCSE Computer Science is harder than “doing GCSE papers”
UK GCSE Computer Science past papers are the wrong revision pack. Cambridge 0478 uses its own paper shape, pseudocode conventions and a 50/50 systems-versus-algorithms split. Students at British-curriculum schools outside the UK who download OCR J277 papers train for an exam they will not sit.
Paper 2 is half the qualification.

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 — what is actually examined
Use the 2026–2028 syllabus. Paper 1 examines computer-systems topics 1–6. Paper 2 examines algorithms, programming and logic topics 7–10, including a scenario-based programming question. How the two papers split the syllabus
Paper 1 — Computer Systems (topics 1–6)
Data representation, data transmission, hardware, software, the internet and cybersecurity, automated and emerging technologies. Definitions must be Cambridge-precise. “Memory” as a vague word does not score; RAM, ROM and virtual memory have different jobs in the mark scheme.
Paper 2 — Algorithms, Programming and Logic (topics 7–10)
Algorithm design, programming, databases, Boolean logic. The scenario-based question is where students who can recite constructs still fail: they must design and write a solution for an unseen context, then consider testing. Cambridge publishes flowchart symbols, logic-gate symbols and a pseudocode guide — we use those documents, not a random YouTube dialect of pseudocode.
0984 is the same subject content as 0478 on a 9–1 scale. Do not enter both. O Level 2210 is a sibling syllabus — tell us if the school uses it; we will not assume 0478.
Where IGCSE Computer Science students lose the grade
Logic-gate diagrams with the wrong symbol or incomplete truth table
Cambridge specifies the symbols. Mixing ANSI/IEEE shapes, missing input combinations, or writing a Boolean expression that does not match the drawn circuit is a full-question loss. We drill the Cambridge symbol sheet until it is automatic.
Scenario programming that restates the story instead of designing a solution
Paper 2’s scenario is not a comprehension exercise. Marks are for inputs, processes, outputs, suitable constructs, and test data. Students who write an essay about the scenario score near zero.
Binary and hex conversion without showing place value
Same leak as GCSE, with no calculator to hide behind. Method marks need the working. We use 128–1 columns every time.
Using OCR J277 papers because they are easier to find
Wrong exam. OCR Exam Reference Language, paper timings and topic codes do not match 0478. Nexus issues Cambridge-style tasks, not leftover UK GCSE homework.
November series is a real IGCSE option — unlike UK GCSE Computer Science, which is summer-only. If the school is entering November, say so in the demo so the plan is not built around a June date.
Paper 2 question types we drill on purpose
Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science Paper 2 is where international students most often under-shoot their Paper 1. These are the shapes we practise, not generic “coding homework.”
Complete or correct an algorithm
Fill in missing constructs, identify the error, or rewrite a step. Students must use the Cambridge pseudocode conventions the paper expects, not Python-only syntax if the question is in pseudocode.
Trace / dry run
A table with identifiers and each pass. Skipping a row loses the question. We mark traces as strictly as the examiner.
Logic circuits and Boolean expressions
Draw the circuit from an expression, or write the expression from a circuit, then complete the truth table. Symbol accuracy is non-negotiable.
Scenario-based design and write
Unseen context. Plan inputs/processes/outputs, choose constructs, write the solution, then state test data. This is the question theory-only students cannot guess.
Cambridge 0478, 0984 and Edexcel 4CP0 — what parents should actually check
The school’s exams officer holds the syllabus code. Parents guessing from a textbook cover is how families buy the wrong past papers. Nexus Academy asks for the code in the booking form and again in the demo.
What Cambridge examiner reports keep repeating
Imprecise technical vocabulary. “The CPU is the brain of the computer” scores nothing. ALU, CU, registers and the fetch–decode–execute cycle are the words the mark scheme lists. We correct vocabulary live, not in a highlight colour on notes.
Logic and algorithms answered in vague English. Paper 2 wants gates, expressions, traces and constructs. A paragraph that explains the idea of a loop without writing the loop does not meet the assessment objective.
Ignoring the scenario constraints. If the question specifies a range check or a particular output format, answers that solve a different, easier problem do not get the design marks. We read the scenario constraints first, then code.
0478 versus 0984 versus 4CP0
Cambridge 0478 is A*–G, two papers, 1 hour 45 minutes each, no calculator, June and November (March in India). 0984 is 9–1 with the same content; availability depends on administrative zone; you cannot sit 0478 and 0984 together.
Pearson Edexcel International 4CP0 is a different qualification. Paper names, programming assessment and grade scale follow Pearson’s international GCSE, not Cambridge’s. We only use 4CP0 papers for 4CP0 students.
UK GCSE OCR J277 is not an IGCSE. International families should not be given J277 homework “because Computer Science is Computer Science.”
If English is not the language of the home
Nexus Academy does not turn Computer Science lessons into IELTS classes. We do mark the English the paper marks: command words, technical nouns, and short explanations of logic. Bilingual students often know the programming and lose the sentence that carries the mark. That is a Computer Science skill, and we treat it as one.

What a typical IGCSE Computer Science lesson looks like
