Quick answer
The equation sheet is in the paper — the marks are not automatic. Identify the quantities, pick the right relationship, rearrange before substituting, convert units, then state the answer to a sensible number of significant figures. Nexus Academy drills that method on GCSE Physics from £14/hr after a free diagnostic. We do not invent a “full equation list” here; use your board’s official sheet.

Parents see a child “revise Physics” by staring at a wall of formulae. Examiners see scripts that pick the wrong line from the sheet, substitute before rearranging, mix millimetres with metres, or round mid-calculation. The sheet is a gift only if the method is automatic.
This guide teaches the habit. For broader grade movement — topic order, past-paper rhythm, practical questions — use how to improve GCSE Physics. For laboratory skills that appear as written questions, see GCSE Science required practicals.
The four-step equation method
1. Identify. Underline every quantity and its unit in the question. Write the symbol you will use (m, v, F, I…). Name the unknown. If a quantity is “constant” or “same”, note that before you touch the sheet.
2. Select and rearrange. Find the matching relationship on the board equation sheet (or recall it if your specification requires it). Rearrange for the unknown before substituting numbers. Algebra errors here cost the method mark even when the final guess is close.
3. Units. Convert to SI before you calculate: cm → m, g → kg, minutes → seconds, kΩ → Ω where the equation expects base units. Write the conversion on the script — examiners reward clear working.
4. Significant figures and sense-check. Use the precision the question asks for, or match the least precise measurement given. Ask: is this answer roughly the right size? A current of 400 A through a filament lamp is a red flag, not a “brave” answer.
Where marks usually leak
| Pattern | What goes wrong | Fix in revision |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong line on the sheet | Picks a lookalike formula (power vs energy, speed vs velocity contexts) | Say the quantity names out loud before choosing |
| Substitute then rearrange | Loses method mark; calculator error compounds | Always rearrange with symbols first |
| Unit conversion missed | Answer off by 10, 100 or 1000 | Convert in a labelled step before numbers |
| No working shown | Right answer, few or no marks if arithmetic slips | Write formula → rearrange → numbers → answer + unit |
| Early rounding | Final value drifts from the mark scheme | Keep extra digits until the last line |
| Forgotten unit on answer | Numerical mark only, or none | Circle the required unit in the question stem |
Practice checklist (use with the official sheet)
- Print the equation sheet for your child’s exact board and specification — not a third-party summary.
- Do ten mixed calculation questions with the sheet open, timing only after the method is fluent.
- Mark with the official scheme: award yourself method, unit and significant-figure marks honestly.
- Rewrite every dropped rearrangement as symbols-only until it is automatic.
- Link equation practice to required-practical graph and variable questions — same unit discipline.
How Nexus Academy tutors equations
The free diagnostic is a short set of calculation and multi-step questions on your child’s board. We note whether the leak is identification, algebra, units or topic knowledge. Weekly sessions then drill those habits on live-style questions — Combined or separate Physics — from £14/hr with no lock-in.
We will not hand you a fabricated “complete equation list”. Boards publish what is provided and what must be recalled; that is the only list that matters in the hall.
Frequently asked questions
Are GCSE Physics equations provided in the exam?
Nexus Academy drills against your child’s official board equation sheet — exam boards supply a sheet with the papers for the equations they choose to provide, while some relationships still need to be recalled. We teach identify, rearrange, units and significant figures, not a random internet list.
Why do students lose marks even when they “know” the equation?
Nexus Academy treats equation questions as a four-step habit because marks leak on rearrangement, unit conversion, missing working and rounding too early — not because the sheet was missing. The sheet only helps if the algebra and units are clean.
Should my child memorise every Physics equation?
Nexus Academy starts from the official sheet and past papers for AQA, Pearson Edexcel or OCR — your child should know which equations appear on the sheet and which must be recalled for their specification. We never use an unofficial “complete list” from a revision site.
How does Physics tutoring help with equations?
Nexus Academy one-to-one sessions from £14/hr work live equation questions under timed conditions, then mark against the scheme for method and unit marks. A free diagnostic shows whether the leak is algebra, units, or topic choice before you book a block.
