Why OCR leads Computer Science when AQA leads Maths
Departments pick a Computer Science board for teacher training, textbooks and the programming language they can staff — not because OCR is “harder” or “the grammar-school board.” OCR’s J277 package is widely used; AQA 8525 is the other large UK route; Pearson 1CP2 is smaller but distinctive because of the on-screen paper.
Third-party resources follow entry size. OCR past-paper banks are thicker than AQA’s in this subject. That is the opposite of GCSE Maths, where Pearson is the giant. Borrowing a Maths-parent heuristic (“everyone is on AQA”) is how families download the wrong Computer Science pack.
Paper 2 is where the boards stop overlapping
Systems theory (CPU, networks, ethics) looks similar on a topic list. The programming paper does not. That is the parent pattern we see most: the child can copy a Python demo in class, then the mock Paper 2 collapses.
OCR J277/02. Section B is practical programming in a written paper. Trace tables, completing code, test data (normal, boundary, erroneous) and writing a short program are the recurring mark-winners. Students who cannot parse Exam Reference Language misread the question before they write a line of Python.
AQA 8525 Paper 1. Two hours of design, write, test and refine. Stamina is part of the grade. A ten-minute coding drill is not this paper. Structure diagrams and pseudocode appear alongside Python.
Pearson 1CP2 Paper 2. Sat at a computer in Python. Indentation, runtime errors and the exam IDE are the exam. Practising 1CP2 on lined paper trains a different skill.

There is no NEA. Stop revising for one.
Ofqual removed GCSE Computer Science NEA. Programming is examined in the papers. Schools sign a Practical Programming Statement to confirm students had the chance to design, write, test and refine programs — that statement is not a grade.
