Quick answer
Nexus Academy tutors GCSE English Language for the November 2026 series — Literature is not in that sitting. AQA Paper 1 is 3 November and Paper 2 is 5 November. If the college needs a Language 4 for funding or a Literature 5 for A Level English, those are two different problems.

Parents search “English resit” and get mixed into Macbeth quotes. The autumn series does not care about the play. It cares whether your child can read an unseen extract, write for a purpose, and keep SPaG under time.
Confirm the November entry is Language, then book GCSE English tutoring. Who can sit, and how entries work, is in the November resits overview. The 4 that sixth-form funding actually uses is explained in why grade 4 matters.
Do not revise the set text
English Literature (the novel, the play, the poetry cluster) is a summer paper. Revising quotations from the set text is wasted November time. Language uses unseen fiction (Paper 1) and unseen non-fiction (Paper 2). The only “texts” that matter are the ones in the exam booklet.
If the college asked for “a 5 in English” for A Level Literature, that may be Language, Literature, or both — ask, in writing. A November Language 4 can clear funding while Literature still waits until June.
Paper 1 versus Paper 2
| AQA 8700 | Reading | Writing |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 — Tue 3 Nov, morning, 1 hr 45 | Unseen fiction extract: information, language, structure, evaluation | Descriptive or narrative writing (Section B) |
| Paper 2 — Thu 5 Nov, morning, 1 hr 45 | Two unseen non-fiction sources: summary, language, comparison | Viewpoint writing — article, letter, speech (Section B) |
Pearson Edexcel and OCR use the same JCQ week with different paper codes. Confirm the specification with the centre before you drill AQA question numbers.
Where a grade 3 usually leaked
Unfinished Section B. The writing task is a large slice of each paper. Students who over-annotate the extract leave twenty minutes for a story or an article and drop a grade on SPaG and structure together.
Quotations without a comment. Copying a phrase is not analysis. The mark scheme wants a short quote plus what it does in the student’s own words — method, not a feature-spotting list.
SPaG under time. Sentence control, homophones, and paragraphing on the writing task. A November tutor marks live writing, not a spelling booklet completed in silence.
Misreading the viewpoint task. Paper 2 writing has a purpose and an audience. A “speech” written as a story, or a letter with no address, throws away easy marks.
Eight weeks, not a reading list
| Weeks | In the lesson | Between lessons |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Diagnostic paper + timing for Section B | One timed writing, marked for SPaG and plan |
| 3–5 | The leaked reading skills from June | Short extracts: quote + comment, not whole novels |
| 6–8 | Full papers under time, both papers | Rewrite the weakest Section B once, not five drafts of the same story |
One 60-minute session a week is enough when June was a high 3 and Section B was unfinished. Two a week if reading comments never left “this shows the writer…”. From £14/hr after a free diagnostic — typically £112 or £224 before 5 November, no lock-in. Nexus Academy does not set a reading list. We mark a recent paper, then rebuild the skills that leaked.
If the summer Language grade was already a 5 and the worry is Russell Group optics, that is a different conversation from a 3 that blocks the condition of funding. Do universities accept GCSE resits?
Spoken language versus the written grade
The 9 to 1 grade on the certificate comes from the written papers. Spoken language is a separate centre-assessed endorsement. If the school still needs a speaking recording, that is their calendar — ask the exams officer. Tutoring at Nexus Academy is Papers 1 and 2 on a laptop, not a replacement for the endorsement.
Frequently asked questions
Can you resit GCSE English Literature in November?
No. The November 2026 GCSE series includes English Language only, not English Literature. Nexus Academy tutors Language for the autumn sitting; Literature is a summer 2027 paper. If the sixth form asked for “English”, check whether they mean Language, Literature, or both.
When are the November 2026 GCSE English Language papers?
AQA GCSE English Language (8700) Paper 1 is on 3 November 2026 and Paper 2 on 5 November 2026, both morning, 1 hour 45 minutes. The spoken language endorsement is a centre-assessed component with its own deadline — that is the school’s process, not a Nexus Academy session. Other boards sit in the same JCQ week.
What does an English Language November resit tutor actually drill?
Nexus Academy drills the two papers on the entry: reading accuracy, short quotations with comment, SPaG, and timed writing. Language resits are lost on vague analysis and unfinished Section B, not on “not reading enough novels”. Sessions are one-to-one from £14/hr after a free diagnostic.
Does the spoken language endorsement count towards the November grade?
Spoken language does not produce the 9 to 1 grade — Nexus Academy prepares the written Language papers, which do. The endorsement (typically Pass, Merit, Distinction or Not Classified) is assessed by the centre. Ask the exams officer whether it still needs completing; we do not replace that assessment.
