A private candidate is someone who sits GCSEs, IGCSEs or A Levels at an approved centre without being enrolled as a pupil there. That is the standard exam route for home-educated students in the UK. Nexus Academy tutors that route. We do not enter candidates, collect exam fees, or guarantee that a local centre has space.
JCQ — the Joint Council for Qualifications — publishes the official search of centres that have indicated they will accept private candidates. For the 2026 series JCQ states there are around 190 such centres in the UK. The list is updated around December and January. Appearing on it does not guarantee capacity in your subjects or your board.

How to find a private candidate GCSE exam centre
Start with the JCQ private-candidate search. Filter by postcode, qualification and awarding body, then contact the centre yourself. Ask which subjects they enter, which board, whether they accept external candidates this series, the fee, photo ID rules, and the entry deadline.
Nexus Academy does not publish a scraped list of those 190 centres. JCQ already maintains the live register. Centres can still accept private candidates even if they are not listed, and listed centres can be full. Treat every result as a lead to telephone, not as a booking.
IGCSE entries often go through Cambridge or Pearson centre finders as well as JCQ, because International GCSE is not the same product as domestic GCSE. Read GCSE vs IGCSE for home-educated students before you assume a local GCSE centre can host Cambridge IGCSE.
Deadlines, fees, and what Nexus Academy will not do
Exam boards publish national entry deadlines for each series. Late entries attract extra fees that can be a large uplift on the standard charge. Start looking 6–9 months before the exams you want. November GCSE resits are a shorter window and usually cover Maths and English Language only — see our November resits 2026 guide.
Centre fees, invigilation and any late charges are paid to the centre, not to Nexus Academy. We tutor the named board from £14 per hour after a free demo lesson, with no lock-in. We do not hold a place, submit an entry, or advise on deregistration — that sits with GOV.UK home education guidance.
A children-not-in-school register is on the statute book in the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026, but those sections are not yet in force. Until they commence, England has no mandatory home-education register. That legal change does not alter how private-candidate exam entries work.

A private candidate can sit a November GCSE resit only if an approved centre accepts an external entry for that series — Nexus Academy does not enter candidates or guarantee a local centre.
