Decide whether GCSEs are the goal
GCSEs are not compulsory in home education. Sit them if you need a Level 2 record for college, sixth form, or later university — not because the law requires it.

Choose GCSE or IGCSE with a centre in mind
Many private candidates sit Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International IGCSE because assessment is mostly exam-only. The centre you find still decides what it will enter.
Step 4
Book an approved exam centre
Use the JCQ private-candidate search 6–9 months before the series. Confirm subjects, board, fees and deadlines with the centre. Nexus Academy does not hold places.
Step 5
Budget tuition separately from exam fees
Centre charges are paid to the centre. Specialist tutoring is optional and hourly. Nexus Academy is from £14/hr for the 1–3 subjects that need a tutor.

Is home education legal in the UK?
Yes. Parents may educate a child at home. You must provide a suitable education; you are not required to follow the National Curriculum or to sit GCSEs. If the child is on a school roll in England, you normally deregister by writing to the school. GOV.UK home education guidance is the official source. Nexus Academy does not give legal advice and does not speak to local authorities for you.
A children-not-in-school register is on the statute book in the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026, but those sections are not yet in force. Until they commence, England has no mandatory home-education register. That legal change does not alter how private-candidate exam entries work.
Do home-educated students have to sit GCSEs?
No. GCSEs are a qualification, not a legal duty of home education. Families sit them when they need a Level 2 record for college, sixth form, apprenticeships, or later university. Others use different evidence of learning. Nexus Academy only tutors the exam route — GCSE, IGCSE or A Level — once you have chosen it.
Many home-educated families sit IGCSE rather than domestic GCSE because the courses are largely exam-assessed. Read GCSE vs IGCSE for home education before you assume a local school GCSE is available as a private candidate.
How do you enter GCSEs as a private candidate?
You cannot enter directly with AQA, Pearson, OCR or Cambridge. An approved school, college or specialist centre makes the entry. JCQ publishes a search of centres that have said they will accept private candidates. JCQ private candidates is the official list. Start 6–9 months before the series.
