“The heart pumps blood faster” does not earn marks where “the heart rate increases to deliver more oxygen and glucose to respiring muscle cells” is required. Biological terminology is not optional decoration — it is how marks are awarded. The mark scheme will specify the precise terms expected.

Six-mark extended response without a logical structure.

Both AQA Biology papers include extended response questions worth 5 or 6 marks requiring continuous written answers. Examiner reports consistently note that students either bullet-point their answers (not prose, which loses marks), fail to sequence points logically, or miss the linking language (“this means that,” “as a result,” “which causes”) that connects cause and effect. Before writing a 6-mark answer, spend 30 seconds identifying the biological process involved, the start point, the end point, and three or four logical steps between them.

Past papers are among the most effective revision tools for GCSE Biology — but only when used with the mark scheme. Completing a paper and putting it aside produces almost no benefit. The value is in the analysis.

After answering each question, mark it against the official mark scheme point by point. For every mark lost, identify the specific biological term or reasoning step that was missing. Note it. Do not give yourself the mark for a vague answer that you know meant the right thing — the examiner will not.
